NAT Type Strict: What It Means and How to Fix It
June 10, 2025
A strict NAT type can make online gaming frustrating, causing connection issues and preventing you from joining friends' games. But what does strict NAT mean, and how can you fix it?
What Does "NAT Type Strict" Mean?
Strict NAT (Type 3) means your router is blocking most incoming connections. This can lead to:
- Lag and high ping
- Voice chat problems
- Matchmaking failures
- Inability to join friends' games
How to Check If You Have Strict NAT
- PlayStation: Settings > Network > View Connection Status
- Xbox: Settings > Network Settings > Test NAT Type
- PC: Check in-game network settings or router admin page
How to Change NAT Type from Strict to Open
- Enable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play):
- Log in to your router's admin page
- Find and enable UPnP
- Port Forwarding:
- Forward the required ports for your console or game
- Save and reboot your router
- DMZ (Demilitarized Zone):
- Place your device in the DMZ (not recommended for security reasons)
